Niagara College is moving ahead with a major expansion of its Applied Health Institute (AHI) designed to train more health-care professionals while increasing access to community-based care.
Designed by Montgomery Sisam Architects, the expansion transforms the Applied Health Institute into a prominent campus gateway and community health hub with a new entrance, pedestrian plaza, landscaped courtyard and a light-filled atrium intended to create a welcoming and accessible environment for students, staff and visitors.
The addition comprises two two-storey building blocks that help resolve existing site alignments. One block mirrors the angle of the existing Applied Health Institute, while the second aligns with the north-south street grid. A two-storey connector links the new and existing buildings, creating a landscaped courtyard at the centre of the development.
At the centre of the building, a feature staircase rises through an open atrium, creating visual connections between programs and encouraging interaction among students, faculty and visitors.
The project is being delivered on an accelerated schedule in response to urgent health-care workforce needs. The expansion is targeting certification under the Canada Green Building Council’s Zero Carbon Building Standard Version 4 and the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification program.
Mass timber construction plays a central role in the sustainability strategy, reducing embodied carbon while supporting efficient assembly. An early design-assist partnership with timber supplier Nordic Structures helped streamline coordination between design and fabrication teams, contributing to both construction efficiency and schedule certainty.
Architecturally, the building reinterprets the original institute’s red brick character through a contemporary palette of weathered steel and burn-brushed cedar siding. The design team says the approach creates a bold but respectful addition that complements the existing campus while signalling the future of health-care education in Niagara.
Once completed, the expanded Applied Health Institute will strengthen Niagara College’s role as a regional leader in applied health education, providing modern learning environments, expanded clinical training opportunities and enhanced community access to care.
Landscape features draw inspiration from the Niagara Escarpment, incorporating layered hardscaping, seating areas and Indigenous medicinal plantings native to the region.
“The expansion responds directly to growing enrolment and the need for additional health-care training capacity,” project officials say. “It also strengthens connections between education and community care by bringing clinical services and learning environments together in one location.”
Program spaces throughout the expansion include dental laboratories, pharmacy labs, paramedic training facilities, a virtual reality suite, general classrooms and flexible clinic space. Social and collaboration areas are located between the two wings, including a community hub and coffee shop overlooking the courtyard.
