Hamilton\u2019s TD Coliseum has reopened after an extensive redevelopment that has transformed the historic arena into a modern entertainment venue intended to serve the city and the Greater Toronto Area for decades.<\/p>\n
The project, led by EllisDon, updated the facility with new design features, technology and infrastructure while preserving elements of its original character. The renewed arena is expected to draw new audiences, support downtown revitalization and strengthen Hamilton\u2019s position as a destination for concerts, sports and live events.<\/p>\n
\u201cStanding in the newly reopened TD Coliseum on opening day, I was filled with pride for what our entire team has accomplished,\u201d said Randy Reymer, senior vice-president and area manager for Southwestern Ontario. \u201cThis transformation is not just a redevelopment \u2014 it\u2019s a testament to the passion, resilience and collaborative spirit that define Hamilton and the surrounding region.\u201d<\/p>\n
Reymer said the project carried a personal significance for many workers. Subcontractors and tradespeople often shared memories of attending events there as children, and some had worked on the original building decades earlier. That connection, he said, helped drive pride and craftsmanship throughout the redevelopment.<\/p>\n
EllisDon worked closely with Oak View Group, BBB Architects, Aquilla, Smith + Andersen, ME and Entuitive. Daily site involvement by the client, architects and consultants allowed for rapid decision-making, with drawings reviewed on the spot and design issues resolved before they could slow progress.<\/p>\n
Challenges included hidden concrete, outdated wiring and inconsistencies between on-site conditions and the original plans. Coordination with the neighbouring Jackson Square Mall added complexity, as the arena ramp connects directly to the shopping centre. Deliveries and major lifts were scheduled tightly to avoid disruptions.<\/p>\n
The venue\u2019s reopening included a soft launch that doubled as a celebration for the project team. EllisDon\u2019s in-house band, The EllisDominators, performed ahead of Earth, Wind & Fire, marking a symbolic moment for workers who contributed to the transformation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
