{"id":778,"date":"2015-10-28T02:37:11","date_gmt":"2015-10-28T02:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/niagaraconstructionnews.com\/?p=778"},"modified":"2015-10-28T02:37:11","modified_gmt":"2015-10-28T02:37:11","slug":"fall-safework-summit-about-occupational-illnesses-nov-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/niagaraconstructionnews.com\/?p=778","title":{"rendered":"Fall SafeWork Summit &#8212; about occupational illnesses: Nov. 17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.niagaraconstruction.org\/\"><strong>The Niagara Construction Association<\/strong> <\/a><\/span>has posted information about a <strong>Fall <em>Safe<\/em>Work Summit<\/strong> on Nov. 17, with a focus on occupational illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) defines \u201coccupational illness\u201d as a condition that results from exposure in a workplace to a physical, chemical and\/or biological agent, whereby, normal bodily mechanisms are affected and the health of the worker is impaired and, for which a worker is entitled to benefits under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (WSIA),&#8221; the summit information document says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Causes of Occupational Illnesses include dusts, vapours, fumes from solvents, metals, poisons and acids; parasites, mould and infectious bacteria; noise, heat, cold and radiation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Between 2005 and 2014, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) allowed 2,060 occupational disease fatality claims. During the same period, occupational disease claims increased from 11,000 to 13,000 and noise induced hearing loss claims went up from 3,000 to 5,000.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The summit&#8217;s panel of experts includes an occupational medicine physician, an industrial hygienist and a lawyer. &#8220;These three professionals will discuss the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, prevention, and control of workplace factors that may cause sickness, injury, impaired health or impaired well-being among workers. The panel will address medical and legal implications for workers, employers and workplaces,&#8221; says the summit information document.<\/p>\n<p>Registration is $235.
